Deele College hosted a very successful careers fair this week, where students had the opportunity to explore a variety of career options open to them in the future.
Over thirty exhibitors were set up in the school’s sports hall for the Making Career Connections event and students were given the opportunity to speak to representatives from third level colleges, apprenticeship training programmes and a range of professions.
With so many avenues and pathways available to young people nowadays, this event gave the students a unique opportunity to talk to people in the various industries, who can guide them on the different paths available in today’s world.
The event, which was expertly organised by the Deele College Guidance Department, gave students an insight into various careers, such as; air traffic control, engineering, nursing/medicine, childcare, computing, hospitality, accountancy, journalism and science.
There were also exhibitions from An Garda Siochana, The Irish Defence Forces and The Irish Coast Guard, which proved popular among students.
A dedicated STEM section was available to highlight the various opportunities open to young people in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while there was also a section detailing the pathway to apprenticeships in the construction industry.
Speaking on the success of the event, school principal, Mr Joe Boyle highlighted the importance of students being given the opportunity to explore career options, which gives them the motivation to succeed in school.
“This week’s event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore the various options open to them in the future and it helps to motivate students when they see what they have to do to achieve their goals.
“We had such a wide variety of careers and professions available to the students and it allowed them to think about what paths they would like to take. Seeing the paths that these people took to get to their chosen careers is very important so that students know that these goals are realistic.
“I would like to thank all the exhibitors who came to the school this week and I would also like to thank our Miss Gearoidin Brady and Miss Fiona Friel and the school committee for their hard work in putting this event together.”
